Chopta Chandrashila Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Dehradun/Rishikesh - Drive to Chopta

  • Distance: Dehradun to Chopta (around 200 km, 7–8 hours by road)

  • Travel Mode: Private vehicle or taxi.

  • Details:

    • You can start your journey from Dehradun or Rishikesh, which are easily accessible by train, bus, or flight. From there, you will travel to Chopta, which is situated at an altitude of 2,680 meters.

    • The drive takes you through scenic landscapes, passing through towns like Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag.

  • Check-in: Arrive at Chopta and check into your accommodation. You can stay at campsites or guesthouses depending on your preference.

  • Overnight Stay: At a guesthouse or campsite in Chopta.


Day 2: Chopta to Tungnath and Chandrashila Summit

  • Trek Distance: Chopta to Tungnath (3.5 km, 3 hours), Tungnath to Chandrashila Peak (1.5 km, 1-2 hours).

  • Altitude Gain: From Chopta (2,680 meters) to Tungnath (3,680 meters), and then to Chandrashila (4,000 meters).

  • Trek Highlights:

    • Begin your trek from Chopta early in the morning, heading towards the Tungnath Temple, which is one of the highest Shiva temples in the world.

    • The path is well-marked and takes you through dense forests of oak and rhododendron.

    • After visiting Tungnath Temple, continue the trek for another hour to reach Chandrashila Peak.

    • From the summit, you can enjoy a panoramic view of several Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba.

    • Spend some time at the top for photos and the serene atmosphere.

  • Return to Chopta: After enjoying the summit views, descend back to Chopta in the late afternoon.

  • Overnight Stay: At Chopta.


Day 3: Chopta to Sari Village (Optional)

  • Distance: Chopta to Sari Village (5 km by road).

  • Travel Mode: By road (approx. 20 minutes).

  • Details:

    • If you have additional time or wish to explore a bit more of the region, you can head to Sari Village, which is known for its beautiful terraced fields and scenic landscapes. It is also the base for the Deoria Tal trek.

    • Take a short walk around the village, enjoy the local culture, and relax by the river.

    • Alternatively, you can rest in Chopta and explore the surrounding meadows.

  • Overnight Stay: At Chopta or in a local guesthouse in Sari.


Day 4: Return to Dehradun/Rishikesh

  • Distance: Chopta to Dehradun (200 km, 7-8 hours).

  • Details:

    • After breakfast, begin your return journey to Dehradun or Rishikesh.

    • Depending on your travel arrangements, you can either continue to Dehradun for your onward journey or stay a night in Rishikesh to explore the town before departure.


Additional Information and Tips

  • Best Time to Visit: The best time for the Chopta Chandrashila trek is from March to June and September to November. During the winter months (December to February), snow-covered landscapes offer a different charm but may make the trek more challenging.

  • Fitness Level: This trek is moderate in terms of difficulty, suitable for people with average fitness levels. However, it is essential to have prior trekking experience.

  • Packing Essentials:

    • Warm clothes (even in summer, it can get chilly at higher altitudes)

    • Waterproof jacket/poncho

    • Trekking shoes with a good grip

    • Water bottle, snacks, and packed lunch

    • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and hat

    • First aid kit

  • Permits: No special permits are required for the trek, but it’s advised to check with local authorities for any updated information.
